Blood Supply Jeopardized in SoCal; NorCal help needed

Posted by Santa Cruz County American Red Cross on October 25, 2007

October 23, 2007 – Oakland, CA – Wildfires have caused the cancellation of several Red Cross blood drives in Southern California resulting in the loss of nearly 200 units (a unit is about a pint) of blood to date. The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors in Northern California to help make up this loss by making an appointment to donate blood by calling 1.800.GIVE.LIFE (1.800.448.3543).

Blood is needed for hospital patients throughout Southern California, including those who have been affected by the fires. “The current wildfires have affected the collection of hundreds of units of blood,” states Jay Winkenbach, CEO for American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region. “We need people to step forward to donate blood and help make sure we have an adequate supply of blood and blood products for patients in every California hospital we serve. By having enough donors to collect to capacity at blood drives and centers the rest of the month we can help meet that need.”

Any healthy person age 17 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds, and in good health may be able to donate blood.

To make an appointment to donate blood, call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE (1.800.448.3543) or visit www.BeADonor.com and search for the blood drive or center location nearest you. The Red Cross has blood centers in Newark, Oakland, Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton and San Jose.

Santa Cruz County American Red Cross deploys volunteers to fire ravaged Southern California

Posted by Santa Cruz County American Red Cross on October 25, 2007

SANTA CRUZ, October 23, 2007 – Wildfires continue to rage across Southern California, forcing thousands to evacuate the area. So far, the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed 3 volunteers to Southern California and the chapter expects several more volunteers to be called. Volunteers currently deployed are Clyta Amadeo, Wendy Ostrow and Douglas Anderson.

More than 3000 people from Southern California spent last night at 11 Red Cross shelters in safe areas outside of their threatened neighborhoods. There, they found Red Cross workers providing a safe place to sleep, a hot meal and access to information. Red Cross mental health counselors are also on site to help clients manage the stress and fear that accompanies all disasters. The Red Cross continues to distribute water and food to firefighters and emergency workers in the affected areas as they work to battle the blazes and safeguard residents.

The American Red Cross continues to urge those who have or will evacuate to register themselves on the Red Cross Safe and Well Website. On this site, people can leave a status message for their loved ones, letting them know their general location and well-being or check to see if a loved one in a disaster effected area has registered. More than 250 new registrations overnight illustrate how meaningful this act can be – the site may be accessed via www.redcross.org.

All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster. SANTA CRUZ FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS

NEW MUSIC WORKS

~ NOSFERATU ~

WITH AN ORIGINAL SCORE BY PHIL COLLINS

WE ARE DRAWING A CROWD TO DRAW SOME BLOOD!!!

[SANTA CRUZ, CA - September 18, 2007]  Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at 7 PM at The Del Mar Theatre, 1124 Pacific Ave., The Santa Cruz Film Festival in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Chapter of the American Red Cross hosts the New Music Works Ensemble for a special eve of Halloween screening of “Nosferatu” - the original and definitive vampire film of 1922 - accompanied by a chilling original score by New Music Works composer and founder, Phil Collins. Eight musicians from far and wide including Timb Harris (of Estradasphere) will perform during Murnau’s classic silent film. This evenings ticket prices are $18 general $15 senior $10 students.

A pledge to give blood to the Red Cross will get attendees $2.00 off the ticket price for this spine-tingling performance.

“One blood donation can save up to three lives. That’s not bad for one hour of your time - not to mention and $2.00 off your ticket to an amazing show.” said Lindsay Segersin, Marketing Manager for the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The Santa Cruz Film Festival is thrilled to join forces with The New Music Works to create awareness of The Red Cross’ amazing work throughout Santa Cruz County.

SCFF invites young and old to participate by wearing their scariest Halloween costume and join in the fun on this “night of the living dead”.

The premiere Santa Cruz performance of this work in at the Rio Theatre in October

2003 elicited a standing ovation from a full house audience. Phil Collins’ score resurrects the terrifying-to-hallucinatory images of F.W. Murnau’s silent horror classic, via an exotic sound world of electronic and acoustic instrumentation.

We are especially excited that the same terror-ific instrumental sextet of players, drawn from New Music Works Ensemble reunite, will be joining us for this epic-length performance!!

Teresa Orosco-Petersen, flute

Timb Harris, electronic violin, trumpet (back from Washington for exclusive Santa Cruz

performance)

Stan Poplin, double bass

Irene Herrmann, concertina and cello

Michael McGushin, sampler keyboard

Jim Kassis, percussion

Phil Collins, Conductor

Collins’ score resurrects the terrifying-to-hallucinatory images of F.W. Murnau’s silent horror classic, via an exotic sound world of electronic and acoustic instrumentation.

Phil Collins speaks on scoring “Nosferatu”:

“Laurence Bedford at the Rio started things off by asking me if New Music Works would like to provide music for the classic horror film, ‘Nosferatu.’  I said yes, absolutely. I had accompanied the movie back in the 80s, on piano and a wheezy little organ - part of an enjoyable year-and-a half stint with Bear Republic Theatre accompanying silent films on a monthly basis at the Art Center Theatre.  I hoped that I could dredge up my sketches from last time around; but for good or ill, I couldn’t find them.

‘Nosferatu’ is the most frightening of monster epics.  It wields image and time like a wand.  The vampire premise alone - sucking blood out of peoples’ necks - is repellent, but the film’s haunting atmosphere is most chilling of all.  Murnau juxtaposes pacing and perspectives with a cunning that pushes viewers off balance.  At the center is Max Schreck’s lead role performance as ‘Nosferatu’, which Murnau imbues with nuances of light, stillness and unearthly motion.  ‘Nosferatu’ reaches into our psyches with images that remain in memory.

In providing music for ‘Nosferatu’ the main challenge is to not interfere. The film operates on the emotional insinuations of atmosphere and rhythms (often pointedly unnatural ones).  Musical accompaniment need only resonate what is there.

While selecting the instrumentation for this piece I sought a palette of electronic and acoustic timbres, with a dollop of Eastern European flavors.  I choose only six players from the New Music Works Ensemble - several of whom are gifted improvisers - because I didn’t want to overwhelm the delicate onscreen blends of movement and light.”

NOSFERATU - Players from the New Music Works Ensemble

Teresa Orosco-Petersen, flute, received her degree at San José State University, where she studied with Isabelle Chapius-Starr.  She performs with the Monterey County Symphony Orchestra, Bayshore Lyric Opera, and has performed regularly with New Music Works since 1997. Teresa also performs with many symphonies and chamber ensembles, including San Francisco Western Opera Theatre, Opera San José, and the Rome Festival Orchestra.

Timb Harris, violin and trumpet, graduated with Honors from UCSC in 1999, where he studied under Roy Malan.  Local audiences of diverse musical categories are familiar with Timb’s sterling musicianship and improvisational gifts. In addition to his ubiquitous identity as a member of the genre-bending local group Estradasphere, Timb was a regular player with New Music Works Ensemble and a frequent ringer for area orchestras.

However, in 2006, Timb and his wife Gabriella moved to Seattle.  Oh Woe was Santa Cruz!!

Timb continues to tour and record with both Estradasphere and the Secret Chiefs 3.

Recently, he has been performing with Masada, John Zorn’s improvisational ensemble.

Stan Poplin, double bass, has been performing jazz and classical music in the Monterey and greater San Francisco Bay areas for the past twenty years.  He is a founding member of the New Music Works Ensemble, and has played with many symphony orchestras, the Cabrillo Music Festival and festivals in Bear Valley and Mendocino.  In 1990 he began a five-year period in Oslo, where he studied, recorded and toured throughout Norway.  Mr. Poplin has made many recordings of jazz and blues as well as classical music.

Irene Herrmann, concertina and cello, has been performing with New Music Works for ten years.  She is an active chamber music performer in the area and presently accompanies choirs at both UC Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College.  Her particular field of interest is chamber music and piano literature of the 20th century, and she worked extensively with the late composer/writer Paul Bowles.

Michael McGushin, sampler keyboard, Michael McGushin, keyboard, is a professor of music at Cabrillo College in Aptos, and coach/accompanist for the UCSC Music Department.  He is well known in the Santa Cruz area as a pianist, composer, and conductor.  He has served as Music Director for productions with Shakespeare Santa

Cruz, Cabrillo Stage and the UCSC Opera Theater.   Michael has performed regularly

with New Music Works since 1985.

Jim Kassis, percussion, Since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1987 to study with San Francisco Symphony percussionist Anthony Cirone, Jim has been teaching and performing both drum set and classical percussion throughout northern California.

Jim serves on the faculty at Santa Clara University and the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain View. He has played with New Music Works Ensemble since 2002.

Phil Collins, Conductor & Composer, Phil Collins was born in San Mateo, California and has lived in Santa Cruz since 1976. In 1979 he co-founded New Music Works and has served as the organization’s Artistic Director and Conductor since 1982.

Collins’ diversified interests and experience as a composer, performer and director have cultivated ongoing collaborative relationships with leading musicians, and artists of diverse disciplines.  As Artistic Director of New Music Works, his eclectic and singular programming of 20th and 21st century music has brought national acclaim to the organization.

NEW MUSIC WORKS

NMW, founded in 1979 and directed by Phil Collins, is dedicated to providing a high quality performance format for contemporary music and music/theater, by stimulating the creation, performance and dissemination of new works by composers living in the Monterey Bay Area and elsewhere in the world.  Through programming that combines the work of living composers of diverse backgrounds and styles, as well as important works from throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, NMW provides historic contexts that enrich our audience’s appreciation of today’s musical milieu.  As the only professional contemporary music group in the South Bay Area, NMW is uniquely qualified to serve today’s composers.  The NMW Ensemble can accommodate the wide spectrum of styles and virtuosities which today’s music calls for, and has proven an inspiration for many composers including Lou Harrison, Jack Body, Henry Brant, Gordon Mumma, Paul Dresher, Pablo Furman, Hyo-shin Na, Terry Riley, and many others.
